Uneven Image Point Distribution in Camera Pre- Calibration and its Effects on 3D Reconstruction Errors

چکیده
In camera pre-calibration, images of a calibration object are commonly used to determine the internal geometry of a camera. The calibration imaging is often optimized to have the calibration object cover as large image area as possible. This is likely to yield a larger concentration of measured image points near the center of the image sensor. In this report, the hypothesis is investigated that this non-uniform image point distribution results in a sub-optimal calibration. An area-based reweighting scheme is suggested to improve the calibration. Additionally, the effect of a choice between a 2D and a 3D calibration object is investigated. A simulation study was performed where both a standard and area-weighted pre-calibration scheme was used in a parallel and a convergent scene. The estimated uncertainty and true errors were computed and compared to the first order predictions and results of perfect calibrations. The area-based calibration showed no reduction in estimation errors. Furthermore, the 3D calibration object did not give a noticeable improvement. However, for the standard and area-based calibrations, the true errors surpassed the estimated uncertainties by up to 26 and 58 percent, respectively.

An automatic and accurate camera calibration using translational planar object
Many 3D reconstruction tasks need implicit camera parameters with high accuracy. To this aim, we propose a novel calibration method using a translational planar object, which is cheaper and flexible. The calibration instruments are installed to collect both the calibration image and the correction image. The world coordinates of control points are assigned by its’ spatial distribution in the de...
متن کاملCalibration for 3D Reconstruction of Thermal Images
The calibration system presented in this article enables to calculate optical parameters i.e. intrinsic and extrinsic of both thermal and visual cameras used for 3D reconstruction of thermal images. Visual cameras are in stereoscopic set and provide a pair of stereo images of the same object which are used to perform 3D reconstruction of the examined object [8]. The thermal camera provides info...

In this paper, we propose a new camera calibration method for the 3D-based image synthesis and 3D reconstruction. We improve the problem as changing the principle point for obtaining the linear equation. According to the error rate, we adapt the non-linear method that minimizes the intrinsic parameters. Namely, it minimizes the intrinsic parameters error with maintaining the computational conci...

In this paper, we investigate the linear self-calibration method proposed by Newsam et al [7] for our project on 3D reconstruction of architectural buildings. This selfcalibration method assumes that the principal point is known, the camera has square pixels and has no skew. It allows 3D shape to be reconstructed from two images while giving the camera the freedom to vary its focal length. Sinc...
متن کاملCamera Calibration Method for Stereo Measurements
Camera calibration is an important and sensitive step in 3D environment reconstruction by stereovision. Small errors in the initial estimation of the camera parameters (especially in the estimation of the principal point) could rise to high errors in the 3D measurements, which are increasing with the working distance. There are many general-purpose calibration methods for calibration of individ...
